What is Research Management and Administration?

All administrative and operational functions dealing with research management are referred to as research management. It addresses pre- and post-award management, as well as contractual agreements.

"Research management embraces anything that universities can do to maximize the impact of their research activity. It includes assistance in identifying new sources of funds, presenting research applications, and advice on costing projects and negotiating contracts with external sponsors. It incorporates project management and financial control systems. It also involves help in exploiting research results - through commercialization, knowledge exchange and dissemination to wider society."

(Boulton G., and C. Lucas 'What Are Universities For?, League of European Research Universities, September 2008)

WHY RMA?

Shelley (2010) found that RMAs now play an important role in the research process, with the most senior ones assisting in the coordination and leadership of their university's research policies and the more junior ones primarily responsible for data collection and information gathering. Both have duties that require them to ask academics to do things for them, which is a significant departure from previous roles in which they responded reactively to academic requests.

An RMA's job description varies widely, but the most important aspect is that it is responsible for developing, administering, accounting for, and complying with requirements, guidelines, and laws relating to externally funded research projects. This includes various stages of the research:

  • innovation, and educational grants, such as before the proposal: identifying and disseminating funding opportunities, advising, and so on.

  • Pre-grant phase: proposal preparation and writing contracting: grant contract conclusion, partnership agreements

  • Post-grant management includes administrative and financial management, communication and dissemination, reporting, liaison, and so on.
